The cube has six sides. The edge length equals 17mm. One side has the area
(17mm)² = 289mm². The cube, then, has a surface area of
6 * 289mm² = 1734mm².
The tent has a surface area (fabric needed) of:
2 ab + cb + cd
2 * 73 *74 + 74 * 52 + 52 * 68 = 18188in².
In case the term cd is unclear, remember that the area of a triangle A equals:
A = (1/2) * B * H
where B represents the base line and H is the height. Since you've got two of these triangles with c = B and d = H we multiply this 2 with the 1/2 in the formula and get 1 as the coefficient, which we may happily refrain from writing down.
