Liesel took The Grave Diggers Handbook because she wanted to use it to learn to read. The second question I don't know the answer to, sorry:( Liesel hids the book under her matress because she knows that she shouldn't have the book (probably not a good enough answer, sorry) When Hans finds the book, he is surprised that Liesel would read that kind of book. Hans eventually finds out that she can't read and doesn't even know the title of the book. Hans then desides to help her learn to read the book. They might not be the best answers, but it's the best I can do. :\
