I don't have a lot of time or money. Was looking into flights but they seem to all have such long lay overs. Not keen on stopping in Turkey.

Cheapest way is to use the bus, for Dubrovnik(CRO) to the Zagreb(CRO), and from Zagreb(CRO) to Ljubljana(SLO).
It will cost you 35-40 euros.

Also, you can tweak this trip, being that this trip has 2 segments:
(1) from Dubrovnik to Zagreb
(2) from Zagreb to Ljubljana
You can use car pool service like BlaBlaCar (site https://www.rs.blablacar.gg/) (also has Android and iPhone app) to share a ride with someone, and this can save you money.
With BlaBlaCar you can go from Dubrovnik to Zagreb for 25 euros, and for Zagreb to Ljubljana for 8-9 euros.
But, you will know the timings and the prices maybe a week before you trip.
Also, you could combine this services (bus and BlaBlaCar) if you are creative enough.
