There's a sidewalk next to my street, but it will make me cross a major highway, adding another 20 minutes to the place I'm going to. I don't follow the directions, but when I'm using a bus, the time to to the bus figures into when I should leave

Can you imagine the number of roads in the world, and how much effort was spent on drawing maps back before the digital age, no more than a generation ago? Not everything was precise to inches of error.
There's the technology to convert to digital maps, which isn't flawless - some roads don't always seem so. New roads are built over time, and nobody's obliged to inform anybody else of their plans maugre all standards (left hand doesn't know what the right is doing, as the proverb goes). Finally, the pathfinding algorithm may not consider your road as efficient for whatever reason.
My father's advice was to always show up ahead of time. Over the years, I've gone through many obstacles (we say "eaten gravel") for failing to heed it, every time.
Rest assured, in this forum I shan't be rambling how back in my day, you were not acknowledged as a Man ere navigating your way through a thick jungle to civilisation with naught but a rough old map of the area bereft of a wind rose and the clothes on your back. The compass you would fabricate by yourself.
