in the 1990's, they didn't have great camaras or im not sure if they had camaras but i think they had to pose for a while, while it developed so people chose not to smile because it takes to long.
Either no one in the latter part of the 19th century was happy or the exposure times were so long that holding a smile was too difficult. My vote is for the latter.
