What happens to salts or chemicals used for snow/ice removal, after all the snow/ice melts?

Where do these salts/chemicals end up if they're not removed? Do they have a harmful effect on roads/driveways/walkways, etc if they're left there?

Answer

Any of these substances used to melt ice or snow that are left on these surfaces will cause no problems but will still cause fresh snow to melt. 
The vast majority of these substances are washed away with the melted snow/ice when the the resultant water flows away down the drains.
